Hua Hin Scenery for FS 2004

This is my long overdue overhaul of Hua Hin. I meant to complete this months ago, but I was kept busy by my real life. This worked out well in the end, since there were a few issues with my scenery that I was unable to resolve until the last few weeks.

Hua Hin is a slightly unusual airport for because it has highway that runs underneath the runway. The default scenery has the highway several hundred meters away. Also, the end of the runway is just a few meters away from the beach, whereas the default scenery has placed it too far away. These issues result in compromises being made, and you may notice this especially near where the runway hits the beach. It is important to understand that this scenery is a compromise between the real-world Hua Hin Airport, and what is possible to create in Flight Simulator. You can expect future updates to this scenery, as issues with the game engine are resolved.

I will post updates to any scenery I create about once per year, if necessary. Otherwise, you can get updates off my website at http://www.martinstrong.com/FS_Project.htm . I don’t see any point in flooding SurClaro with endless postings of the same scenery like some people do.

Features:
* airport completely redesigned from scratch – custom 3-D buildings created,
* AFCAD2 file included,
* Custom shoreline created in Ground2K4.

Installation

Unzip to any folder you wish. Make sure “Use folder names” is checked off in Winzip so that the proper directories will be created for you. It should create a directory called “Hua Hin” with subdirectories called “scenery” and “texture”. If this doesn’t happen for some reason, then just make a new directory called “Hua Hin 2004”, and creat sub-directories names “scenery” and “texture”, and place all the *.bgl files into the “scenery” subdirectory and all the *.bmp files into the “texture” subdirectory. Go into FS2004 and add the scenery in the usual manner. If you don’t know how to do this, then RTFM or go to www.SurClaro and there are tutorials that tell you how to do this. Flatten and exclude switches are not required for any of this scenery.

I have also included a “landclass” file. If you don’t know what these are, don’t worry since they are not really necessary. However, it is important that you do not put the landclass file titled “Hua Hin Landclass.bgl” in the same directory as the onter scenery files in this distribution.

“Hua Hin Landclass.bgl” needs to be in a scenery directory that does not have a texture directory.

I think that there are enough landclass files going around that people understand what I mean. Here’s a screenshot to show you what your directory tree should look like:

Design

I have optimized my scenery using every technique available to increase framerates. Every tree that you see is a library object. All textures are DXT1/3, and all models have a LOD built into them. That is why you may see some of the smaller objects pop in at close distance. This is a trade-off for getting better framerates. However, there are things completely beyond my control that will also affect framearates:

* Autogen
* AI aircraft
* Your own aircraft

Two individuals helped me out a lot by providing me with some excellent maps and many, many photgraphs.

Sukit Sittisudjatum from thaiflight.com not only had good maps and pictures, he also had first-hand knowledge of the layout of the airport. He was always patient with me even though I had many questions about the buildings.

Erik Frikke takes quite a few photographs of airports while travelling. I found him on airliners.net, and I emailed him asking if he had any more pictures of Hua Hin. He certainly did, and he actually burned a CD and mailed it to me. He isn’t even involved with FS at all, and he still did this for me. He didn’t even ask for postagge in return, but perhaps if we meet one day, I’ll buy him several beers. His photographs are amazing, and they were invaluable in getting the textures on the buildings right.

Thai Flight Simulator
http://www.thaiflight.com/

I strongly recommend that you drop by this site if you are interested in Thailand. He has collected many sceneries for Thailand, most of which were built for FS98, but he also has mesh terrain that he has created and updated FS2K airports for Bangkok, Krabi and Chiang Rai. He obviously has put a lot of work into this.

He also has many aircraft available for download. The B717s created by Apichart Owcharoenporn are especially impressive.

Other Stuff

This scenery is freeware. You never have to pay to use it. It will always be free from my website at http://www.martinstrong.com/FS_Project.htm . The textures and objects that I have created are copyrighted by me. If you want to use them, just email me at martinstrong@martinstrong.com and I’ll be more than happy to let you do this. If you want the original *.api files for any of the objects, just email me and it’ll be “no problem”. Just remember to give me credit. Do not upload this scenery to other websites. I am tired of seeing my scenery on other peoples sites with “uploaded by: Joe Blow” underneath it. If you feel that this scenery would complement your websites library, then please contact me first, and I will deal with it on a case-by-case basis. Usually it won’t be a problem.
